What the investigation covers

A noisy system is often a sign of poor circulation, trapped air, incorrect settings, or worn components. The investigation is designed to pinpoint the source of the noise and recommend the right fix.

• Listen to and locate the noise (radiators, pipework, pump area, valves)
• Check system pressure and basic operation
• Inspect radiator performance, cold spots, and signs of air or sludge
• Assess pump operation, speed settings, and circulation issues
• Check key valves and controls (TRVs, lockshields, zone valves, bypass where fitted)
• Look for causes of water hammer, vibration, and expansion noises
• Advise on corrective work such as balancing, venting, adjustments, parts replacement, or system cleaning

• Banging or knocking when the heating turns on or off
• Kettling or rumbling sounds, especially as the system warms up
• Whistling from radiators or valves
• Clicking and ticking from pipework as it heats and cools

How the visit works

You’ll be asked a few questions about when the noise happens and which areas are affected. The engineer will then run the system, carry out checks and tests, and isolate likely causes methodically. Many investigations can be completed in a single appointment, although some faults need follow-up work or parts.

What happens after the investigation

You’ll get a clear explanation of the cause and the options to put it right, prioritised by safety and value. If repairs or optimisation are needed, you can choose the next step, whether that is a simple adjustment, a targeted component replacement, or deeper work such as cleaning and rebalancing. Where the findings suggest the noise is coming from outside the distribution side, you’ll be advised on the most appropriate next action.
